Eggnog Recipes With Alcohol

Eggnog is a sweet drink that is made from milk, sugar and beaten eggs which gives it a frothy look. Eggnog can be mixed with alcoholic beverages like brandy, rum, wine, etc. Making this drink is quite simple. Go through these recipes and try them at home.
Eggnog is mostly popular in the United States and Canada, and is usually consumed at Christmas and New Year. There is a popular belief that the tradition of eggnog was carried down from Europe to the United States. It was usually mixed with wine but in America eggnog was concocted with rum.
In the 1800s, egg nog was a social drink and made in large quantities. This drink was served during holidays and celebrations. This is a versatile drink and goes well with alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages.

Eggnog Recipes Using Alcohol

Eggnog is usually synonymous with celebration and is made in almost every household during Christmas and also to welcome the New Year. Mentioned here are some recipes for making eggnog, using different alcoholic drinks.

Traditional Recipe

  • Rum, brandy, or bourbon, 1 cup
  • Sugar syrup, 2 tablespoons
  • Vanilla essence, ½ tablespoon
  • Whole milk, 2 cups
  • Large eggs, 4
  • Whipped cream, ½ cup
  • Nutmeg or cinnamon powder, ¼ teaspoon
  • A pinch of salt
Beat eggs, sugar syrup and salt till the ingredients are mixed properly. Now, add milk slowly while whisking so that it forms a smooth mixture. Heat a pan and add the contents, stirring it continuously on a low flame, till the mixture become thick. Allow the mixture to cool for a while.
Take a sieve and drain the mixture to remove unwanted pieces. Pour it into a large container and add vanilla essence, add the alcohol of your choice and cover it with a plastic foil. Refrigerate till required. Before serving mix the egg custard and cream, whip, till it becomes frothy. Sprinkle nutmeg powder and serve chilled.

With Rum

  • Cream, ½ cup
  • Rum, 1 fluid ounce
  • Eggs, 6
  • Sugar syrup, ½ cup
  • Milk, 1 quart
  • Bourbon, ½ quart
  • Cinnamon powder, 1 teaspoon
Separate the egg yolks from the white and whisk them with sugar syrup. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites till it gives a frothy appearance. Mix the yolk and egg white mixture, add milk, bourbon, cream and rum while stirring it gently. Chill the mixture and while serving, sprinkle cinnamon powder.

With Brandy

  • Eggs, 3
  • Vanilla essence, 1 teaspoon
  • Milk, ½ cup
  • Brandy, 2 cups
  • Whipped cream, 1 cup
  • Powdered sugar, ½ cup
  • Freshly grated nutmeg, ½ teaspoon
  • A pinch of salt
Separate the egg yolks from the whites. In a bowl add the egg yolks, vanilla, ¼ cup powdered sugar, salt and nutmeg and mix them with a blender till the mixture becomes thick. Add the milk and brandy, refrigerate it for about 10 hours or overnight.
Beat the egg white till it gives a frothy appearance. Add the cream and ¼ cup powdered sugar and whisk them with the egg white. Pour the chilled mixture with the topping in a glass and garnish it with nutmeg.

With Cognac

  • Eggs, separated, 6
  • Cognac, ½ cup
  • Heavy cream, whipped, 2 quarts
  • Bourbon, 1 cup
  • Granulated sugar, ½ cup
  • Freshly grated nutmeg, 1 teaspoon
  • Salt, ¼ teaspoon
Whisk the egg yolks till they change color. Add cognac and bourbon and beat it. Keep it in the refrigerator for about 3½ hours. In a separate bowl beat the egg whites with the salt and add the whipped cream and egg white melange to the yolk mixture. Allow it to chill for about half an hour. Garnish it with grated nutmeg and serve it in a punch bowl.

Cooked Eggnog

  • Whole milk, divided, 4 cups
  • Sugar, ¼ cup
  • Light or dark rum, ¾ cup
  • Eggs, well beaten, 6
  • Vanilla extract, 1¼ teaspoon
  • Ground nutmeg, ¼ teaspoon
  • A pinch of salt
Blend the eggs, milk, sugar and salt in a medium-sized saucepan. Place the saucepan over low heat and stir till the mixture thickens a bit and all the ingredients are incorporated.
Remove the pan from the heat and mix the rum and vanilla extract. Whisk to mix them properly. Cover the pan with a lid and refrigerate it overnight before enjoying it. Sprinkle nutmeg and enjoy this chilled beverage.
