Sarah Josepha Hale, the woman who actually wrote the classic song "Mary Had a Little Lamb", campaigned tirelessly for 17 years to make Thanksgiving a national holiday, by writing letters to the President. Eventually, President Lincoln declared it a holiday in 1863.
In many western countries, Thanksgiving is celebrated to mark the start of the fall season. It is to thank the Almighty for all the blessings and mercies He has shown upon us at all times. The exact date for Thanksgiving varies in different countries. For instance, people of the United Sates celebrate it on the fourth Thursday of November, while the Canadians observe it on the second Monday of October.
