How to Make Eggnog

Eggnog is a delicious drink that is extremely popular during the holiday season. Though this drink is easily available at any grocery store, you can make it at home.
In fact, you can even tweak the original recipe a little, and your version might turn out to be even better than what you get at the grocery store. Here's all you need to know for making this delicious, creamy, and frothy drink.

Recipe for Traditional Eggnog

With Alcohol

  • Eggs, 6
  • Whole milk, 3 cups
  • Dark rum, ½ cup
  • Milk, 1 cup
  • Sugar, ½ cup
  • Half and half, 1 qt.
  • Whipped cream
  • Nutmeg, a pinch
  • Cinnamon
  • Salt, ¼ teaspoon
  • Start by separating the egg yolk and whites.
  • Use a whisk to beat the egg yolks.
  • Add sugar to the egg yolk and then add salt.
  • Stir well and add dark rum to it.
  • Put 3 cups of milk, followed by half and half (a mixture of milk and cream that has a fat percentage between 10.5% and 18%) and one cup of milk. Stir well.
  • Take another bowl and beat egg whites till they form soft peaks.
  • Put a teaspoon of sugar and mix it well.
  • Beat the egg whites again and stop only when hard peaks are formed.
  • Then, fold the egg whites into the egg yolk mixture that you had prepared earlier.
  • Pour the drink into glasses and garnish it with whipped cream.
  • You can sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg to add flavor to the drink.

With Ice Cream

  • Eggs (separated), 4
  • Vanilla extract
  • Vanilla ice cream, ½ gallon
  • Sugar, ½ cup
  • Milk, ½ gallon
  • Rum, ¾ cup
  • Start by separating the eggs.
  • Beat egg yolk and once it is thick, add half a cup of rum to it.
  • Take a bowl and beat the egg whites well.
  • Take another bowl and add milk, vanilla ice cream, sugar, and vanilla extract.
  • Keep stirring till the ice cream melts completely.
  • Then, add the egg yolk to it and mix well.
  • Fold in the egg whites and stir.
  • Add the rest of the rum to it.
  • Refrigerate it for a couple of hours.
  • Before serving, put it in the mixer to make it frothy.
  • Sprinkle a pinch of nutmeg and enjoy your creamy drink.

With Chocolate

  • Eggs, 6
  • Milk, 2 cups
  • Chocolate milk, 2 cups
  • Cream, 1 cup
  • Dark rum, ¾ cup
  • Sugar, ½ cup
  • Nutmeg, ½ tspn
  • Cinnamon, ½ tspn
  • Chocolate shavings
  • Pour milk and chocolate milk in a large saucepan and heat it on a medium flame.
  • In a large bowl, beat the eggs and sugar till you get a thick consistency.
  • Add this hot milk to the beaten eggs and whisk well.
  • Pour this entire mixture in the saucepan and heat it on a low flame.
  • Add cream to it and stir till the mixture is thick.
  • Remove it from the heat and add rum, cinnamon, and nutmeg to it.
  • Cover it and refrigerate for a couple of hours.
  • Before serving, garnish with chocolate shavings.

Without Alcohol

You can also make eggnog without alcohol. Replace alcohol with vanilla to make a non-alcoholic drink for kids. Here's the recipe.
  • Milk, 4 cups
  • Egg yolks, 10
  • Sugar, 1½ cups
  • Ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon
  • Cloves, 3
  • Nutmeg, a pinch
  • Cream, 4 cups
  • Vanilla extract, 2 teaspoons
  • Add milk, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla extract in a saucepan and cook it on a low flame.
  • Keep stirring till it comes to a boil.
  • Now, take a bowl and put egg yolks and sugar in it.
  • You need to make sure the texture is not lumpy, so whisk it well.
  • Pour the mixture that you had prepared earlier gradually.
  • Pour this mixture in the saucepan and let it cook over a medium flame.
  • Keep stirring, but don't let it come to a boil.
  • Just let it thicken and remove the cloves from the mixture.
  • Let it cool. Add cream to it and refrigerate for a couple of hours. Serve chilled.
